License Management Options

Node-locked (fixed seat, computer-specific) License

l Each computer requires a license to run Origin.

l A license wizard is provided in Origin to activate the license from the OriginLab website. An offline option is also provided.

l You can deactivate a license from Origin.

Concurrent Network (Floating) License

l A FLEXnet license server is provided by OriginLab. If you already manage other software with FLEXnet, you can use an existing FLEXnet server to manage Origin (as long as the OS is supported by OriginLab).

l You set up a license service on a network server or workstation that all Origin computers have a connection to.

l The license service counts the number of computers running Origin at same time, and restricts this to the purchased number.

l The Concurrent Network license is subject to time zone restrictions, which requires all client machines on which Origin is running in the same time zone as that of the server machine.

l A borrow option is provided for travel.

l Mixed Origin and OriginPro Concurrent Network Package is provided by OriginLab.

l You can restrict usage with an options file.

Dongle

l Available to COM and GOV users.

l A USB dongle is provided by OriginLab. One dongle is provided per seat purchased.

l The dongle must be in the USB port to run Origin.

Origin is the data analysis and graphing software of choice for over a million scientists and engineers in commercial industries, academia, and government laboratories worldwide. Origin offers an easy-to-use interface for beginners, combined with the ability to perform advanced customization as you become more familiar with the application.

System Requirements

Windows

These system requirements apply to the most recent release of Origin and OriginPro.

  • Operating System: 64-bit (x64) Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 11
  • Processor: 1.6 GHz 64-bit (x64)
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended)
  • Hard Disk Space: 3.0 GB of free hard disk space for program installation + Help files (does not include data storage).
  • Other hardware: USB port or DVD drive (if installing from USB stick or DVD)
  • Browser: It requires Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7, or Microsoft Edge on Windows 11.

Large Datasets, Additional Recommendations:

For users who work with large datasets (e.g. import text files of 10MB in size, or greater), OriginLab makes the following additional recommendations.

  • Multi-core processor: The more logical processors, the better
  • RAM: At least 16 GB, the more memory the better
  • Drive: Solid State Drive (SSD), the faster the better
  • Network: If data are on a network, 1000 Mb (Gigabit) is better

See also, documentation of the system variable @IAS which controls the least file size (in MB) to enable multi-threading for import.

Dark Mode, Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (Version>=1809)

Mac

Mac users can run Origin by using Microsoft Windows via Boot Camp or within OS X using third-party virtual machine software.
